Via Appia Antica– Ancient Appian Way is one of the earliest road of the Roman Republic: one of the greatest engineering works of all times, which keeps surprising the contemporary world. The road is named after Appius Claudius Caecus, the Roman censor who began and completed the main part in 312 BC.

It’s definitely worth a visit for almost 5 reasons.

  1. It was the “Regina Viarum“, that means it was considered by Romans as the queen of all streets in the Eternal City. 538 kilometers from Rome to Brindisi, in South Italy.
  2. It was used for different kinds of trips and it is full of history: Horace, Virgil and Maecenas travelled here together.
  3.  Along the Appian Way we can still find some remains and monumental tombs. Rich families used to bury their beloved ones here. The Mausoleum of Cecilia Metella, Capo di Bove, Santa Maria Nova and Villa dei Quintili are some of the most beautiful sites you can visit (buying a ticket).
  4. It is a peaceful place where you can rent a bike or do some outdoor activities, like walking or jogging, surrounded by nature and memories of the Ancient Rome.
  5. You can have an “aperitivo” or a delicious ice-cream at the “Appia Antica Caffè“, a really nice bar in the heart of the Appian Way. Can you imagine enjoying the sunset from such a stunning place, having a drink and relaxing?
